“This journey is a mission to preserve the legacy of the traditional Indian folk-art forms. With every brushstroke, every design, and every workshop, I am not just creating art—I am creating a movement, one that connects people to the roots of India’s artistic heritage,” believes Khushboo, founder of Folkshala.
India is home to a wide array of traditional folk and tribal art forms, including Madhubani, Warli, Miniature, Pattachitra, Gond, Tanjore, to name just a few. The desire to promote this artistic treasure led me to an unconventional start—teaching the daughters of household helpers. What began with just one or two students quickly grew into a small, enthusiastic community. Their interest and enthusiasm inspired me to take this endeavor further, and thus, in 2022, “Folkshala:A Soulful Creation” was born.
Let us take a deep dive into this fascinating journey of an engineer turned art entrepreneur, Wing Commander Khushboo Gupta, Retd.

Introduction
Hailing from the vibrant city of Lucknow, my journey has been one of transformation, dedication, and rediscovery. After completing my engineering from Prayagraj, I embarked on a remarkable career by joining the prestigious Indian Air Force in 2007 as a technical officer specializing in radars. For 14 years, I gave my best to the organization, and in return, it shaped me into the person I am today. My unwavering dedication was recognized with the Chief of Air Staff Award in 2019—an honor that reaffirmed my commitment to service.
TheTurning Point
In 2021, after completing my tenure in the Air Force, I made a life-altering decision to hang up my uniform and embrace a new path. Unlike many of my peers, I chose not to enter the corporate world, but instead focus on my family while reigniting a long-lost passion: traditional Indian art. This journey began with Warli art from Maharashtra and Lippan art from Gujarat, both of which captivated me with their depth and cultural richness.

Warli Art
I started my artistic journey with one of India’s oldest and most captivating art forms—the traditional Warli art of Maharashtra. Rooted in the culture of the Warli tribe from the North Sahyadri range, this ancient art, dating back to 2000-3500 BC, fascinated me with its simplicity and storytelling essence. Unlike elaborate paintings, Warli art relies on basic geometric shapes inspired by nature—the circle (representing the sun and moon), the triangle (symbolizing mountains and trees), and the square (depicting the sacred spaces of the tribe).
Traditionally painted on clay walls with red ochre and rice paste, this art form embodies a deep connection with nature and tribal traditions.
As Warli art transitioned from walls and floors to paper, canvas, and modern décor, I found myself drawn to its evolving possibilities. The narratives of Kansara Chi Puja and Ayichi Puja, along with depictions of poverty, struggles, and natural calamities, showcase the depth and realism of this art form.
Today, Warli artists are expanding beyond their traditional themes, creating artwork for exhibitions and contemporary spaces. My journey began with small handcrafted items like Warli cards, gift tags, bookmarks, and bottle art, eventually leading to wall murals. Observing evolving trends, I experimented with fusion art, blending Warli with Lippan and Mandala art to create unique and innovative designs. Through my venture “Folkshala”, I aim to preserve and promote these rich traditional art forms, making them more accessible and relevant in today’s world.

Lippan Art
After immersing myself in the beautiful Warli art of Maharashtra, I expanded my artistic journey to explore the dazzling art of Gujarat—Lippan, or Mud and Mirror Art. I was drawn to this craft because of its shimmering effect, created when mirrors reflect light, earning it the name “Glittering Art.”Lippan art is a traditional craft from the Kutch region of Gujarat, originally used to adorn and brighten homes, both in appearance and spirit. It involves creating intricate patterns on walls or mud surfaces using a mixture of clay and mirror pieces. These stunning, reflective designs can be crafted in various sizes, shapes, and colors, adding a unique visual appeal.
The word “Lippan” translates to “dung” or “clay” in the local dialect, referring to the natural materials originally used. Over time, this art form has evolved to suit modern interiors. Artisans have adapted Lippan’s intricate craftsmanship to create contemporary décor pieces. Now available on wooden panels, ceramic bases, and waterproof surfaces, Lippan art has found its way into homes, offices, and online marketplaces as a popular wall décor choice.

To make the artwork longer-lasting, odor-free, and easier to maintain, traditional materials like dung have been replaced with chalk powder, sawdust, and glue. This evolution has made Lippan art more durable, washable, and non-breakable, ensuring it remains relevant in modern home design.
At Folkshala, we have embraced the versatility of Lippan art, incorporating it into nameboards, trays, coasters, T-light holders, wall décor, and murals. By blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics, we aim to keep this radiant art form alive, making it a cherished addition to modern spaces.

Folkshala : In it’s True Spirit
At Folkshala, we do not just conduct workshops but also create customized, theme-based traditional and contemporary nameboards, wall art, murals, cards, and home décor for every occasion. Whether it’s for corporate gifting, special occasions, or personal keepsakes, each piece is meticulously handcrafted to add a touch of cultural charm and creativity.

Through Folkshala, I have conducted workshops for over 200 children, empowering them with the beauty of Warli and Lippan art. My sessions for the Sanginis (women of the Air Force community) have fostered a shared appreciation for traditional crafts, turning art into a means of empowerment. Participation in cultural festivals like Sangini Fest 2022 and Trishakti Fest 2023 has given me the opportunity to showcase my work on larger platforms, spreading the essence of Indian heritage.

A Final Word
These art forms act as a bridge connecting us to our rich heritage, reminding us of the journey our ancestors undertook. To achieve this, I incorporate contemporary elements into my products. Rather than being strictly conventional, I use innovative approaches to customize the products and give them a modern outlook while retaining their traditional roots. My journey with Folkshala has been more than just a career shift. Through my workshops and handcrafted creations, I strive not only to teach techniques but also to instill a deep cultural appreciation, ensuring these age-old traditions continue to inspire future generations.
